How to Choose Poker Chips
The best poker chips for your game depend on a few simple choices:
- Denominated or non-denominated: Do you want values printed on the chips, or colors you assign yourself?
- Material: 100% clay, clay composite, or ceramic, each with its own feel and look.
- Weight: From light 8.5-gram chips to heavy 14-gram chips.
- Size: Standard 39mm chips, or oversized 43mm chips for a bigger look at the table.
- Game type: Low values for cash games, or high values for tournaments.
Denominated and Non-Denominated Poker Chips
Denominated poker chips have values printed right on the chip, so everyone at the table knows what each stack is worth at a glance. They're the easiest choice for most cash games and tournaments. Non-denominated poker chips use color instead of printed values, so you can set your own amounts for any stakes or game. Most of our styles are denominated, with non-denominated options if you'd rather set your own values.
Clay, Clay Composite, and Ceramic Poker Chips
Clay composite poker chips blend clay with other materials for durability, crisp designs, and a solid weight, often with a metal insert for extra heft. They make up most of our lineup, from 8.5 to 14 grams. 100% clay poker chips, including Milano, Phoenix, and Jupiter Club, have a soft, textured feel that many players prefer. Ceramic poker chips, like Scroll, carry a full-surface printed design with values on both sides and the edge.
Find the Right Poker Chip Weight
- 8.5 grams: Super Diamond, a light, firm chip for budget-friendly sets.
- 10 grams: 100% clay Milano and Phoenix, plus ceramic Scroll.
- 11 grams: Jupiter Club, our oversized 43mm clay chip.
- 11.5 grams: Striped Dice, a solid mid-weight chip with a blank inlay.
- 13.5 grams: Claysmith Desert Heat, The Mint, Poker Knights, Showdown, and Monaco Club.
- 14 grams: Ace Casino, Ace King Suited, Black Diamond, Crown & Dice, Eclipse, King's Casino, Las Vegas, Monte Carlo, Ultimate, and Yin Yang.
Standard 39mm and Oversized 43mm Poker Chips
Standard poker chips measure 39mm across, and all of our styles are 39mm except Jupiter Club. Jupiter Club chips are an oversized 43mm, which gives them a bigger, bolder presence on the table. Because they're larger, 43mm chips need cases and trays made for their size, which you'll find on our poker chip cases page.
Poker Chips for Cash Games and Tournaments
Cash games need low values for small blinds and making change, and most of our denominated styles start at 25¢. Tournaments need high values for deep stacks and color-ups. Ace Casino, Poker Knights, Showdown, and Monaco Club go up to $25,000, and Jupiter Club goes all the way to $100,000. Non-denominated chips work for either format, since you choose the value of each color.
Popular Poker Chip Styles
Holographic and Bold-Inlay Poker Chips
These 14-gram clay composite chips stand out with bold inlay artwork. Ace Casino, Black Diamond, Las Vegas, and Ultimate have bright holographic inlays, Yin Yang features a Royal Flush yin-yang design, and Eclipse pairs a black gear inlay with easy-to-read values.
Claysmith Vintage Casino Poker Chips
Claysmith Gaming's 13.5-gram clay composite chips bring back the look of classic Las Vegas card rooms. Desert Heat is inspired by the Mirage poker room chip, The Mint draws on Del Webb's Mint, and Poker Knights, Showdown, and Monaco Club share the Sword & Spade mold, with values up to $25,000.
100% Clay and Ceramic Poker Chips
Milano and Phoenix are 10-gram, 100% clay chips with a soft, textured feel, and Jupiter Club offers 100% clay in an oversized 43mm size. Scroll is our only ceramic chip, with a full-surface Victorian scrollwork print.

King's Casino and Monte Carlo are 14-gram clay composite chips with 12 denominations from 25¢ to $10,000. King's Casino features a royal inlay and laurel filigree edge, while Monte Carlo has a Monte Carlo Poker Club inlay and triple-crown edge.

Poker Chips FAQ
What are the best poker chips for home games?
For most home games, 13.5- to 14-gram clay composite chips are a great all-around choice, with a solid feel and durable, easy-to-read designs. If you want a premium feel, choose 100% clay chips like Milano or Phoenix. For a budget-friendly set, lighter chips like Super Diamond or Striped Dice keep costs down.
Should I buy denominated or non-denominated poker chips?
Choose denominated chips if you want values printed on every chip, which makes counting pots and making change fast for any group. Choose non-denominated chips if you play different stakes or games and want to assign your own value to each color.
How many poker chips do I need?
A 300-chip set, or 12 rolls, works for cash games with up to about 6 players. A 500-chip set, or 20 rolls, covers most home games with 8 to 10 players, and 600 chips, or 24 rolls, adds room for rebuys. For tournaments or two tables, plan on 1,000 chips, or 40 rolls.
What size are standard poker chips?
Standard poker chips are 39mm in diameter, the size used in most casinos and home games. Oversized chips, like our 43mm Jupiter Club, are larger for a bolder look and need cases sized for 43mm chips.
What's the difference between clay and clay composite poker chips?
100% clay chips have a soft, textured feel and are usually lighter, around 10 to 11 grams in our lineup. Clay composite chips blend clay with other materials, which makes them more durable and allows for sharper graphics and heavier weights up to 14 grams.
Are heavier poker chips better?
Not necessarily. Heavier chips feel substantial and stack with a satisfying weight, but weight is a matter of preference rather than quality. Our premium 100% clay chips weigh 10 to 11 grams, while many of our clay composite chips weigh 13.5 to 14 grams.
Why are poker chips sold in rolls of 25?
Each roll holds 25 chips of a single denomination or color, so you can buy exactly the mix your game needs instead of a fixed set. Start with the values you use most, then add rolls as your game grows.
Complete Your Poker Set
Once you've picked your chips, keep them organized in one of our poker chip cases, from 300-chip starter cases to 1,000-chip rolling cases, and finish the table with playing cards, a dealer button, and dice from our poker accessories.
