Best Poker Chip Set for a Home Game: How to Choose

The short answer

For most home games of 8 to 10 players, the best poker chip set is 500 chips of 13.5- to 14-gram clay composite in a locking aluminum case. That covers a full table, the chips have a solid casino feel, and the case keeps your chips, cards and dice in one place.

The right set for you depends on three things: how many people play, whether you run cash games or tournaments, and how you want the chips to feel. This guide walks through each one, with sample chip breakdowns you can copy.

The best poker chip sets by type of game

Every set on our site is built from rolls of 25 chips, so any of these styles can be the base of your set.

Also worth a look: King's Casino for an all-round set, The Mint for a vintage look, Showdown and Monaco Club for tournaments, Phoenix for 100% clay, and Crown & Dice if you want to set your own values.

How many chips do you need?

Plan on about 50 chips per player, which makes 500 chips right for 8 to 10 players. Go bigger if you run rebuys, tournaments or more than one table.

Players Set size Rolls of 25 Cases that fit
Up to 6, cash game 300 chips 12 300 Count Aluminum
8 to 10 500 chips 20 500 Count Aluminum or 500 Count Black Mahogany Wooden
10, with rebuys 600 chips 24 600 Count Aluminum or 600 Count Acrylic
Tournaments or two tables 1,000 chips 40 1000 Count Aluminum, Rolling or Acrylic

Sample 500-chip sets for a cash game and a tournament

A cash game set puts most of its chips in the low values for blinds and change. A tournament set skips the small change and builds big starting stacks.

Cash game: 8 players, 25¢ and 50¢ blinds

Value Chips Rolls of 25
25¢ 150 6
50¢ 100 4
$1 150 6
$5 75 3
$25 25 1
Total 500 20

A $20 buy-in is 12 × 25¢, 10 × 50¢ and 12 × $1, or 34 chips per player. All 8 players can buy in and you still have chips left for change and rebuys.

Tournament: 10 players, 10,000-point starting stacks

Value Chips Rolls of 25 In each starting stack
25 100 4 8
100 200 8 18
500 100 4 8
1,000 50 2 4
5,000 50 2 0 (for color-ups)
Total 500 20 38 chips

The 5,000 chips stay in the case at the start. As the blinds go up, trade the small chips in for them so stacks stay easy to count.

Using a non-denominated style? Pick five colors and give each one a value from either table.

Chip weight and material

Weight and material change how chips feel, sound and stack, so pick what you like holding. Heavier isn't always better.

Hand stacking Milano 100% clay poker chips on a red poker table

Material Weight How they feel Styles
Clay composite, heavy 13.5g to 14g Solid and weighty, with sharp printed inlays Monte Carlo, King's Casino, Las Vegas, Ultimate, Ace Casino, Black Diamond, Eclipse, Yin Yang; Claysmith's Desert Heat, The Mint, Poker Knights, Showdown and Monaco Club
Clay composite, light 8.5g to 11.5g Lighter in the hand Striped Dice (11.5g), Super Diamond (8.5g)
100% clay 10g to 11g Soft and textured, with a quieter riffle Milano, Phoenix, Jupiter Club (43mm)
Ceramic 10g Smooth, with the design printed across the whole chip Scroll

Denominated or not? Chips with printed values are quicker to read and count, so they suit most groups. Non-denominated chips let you set the value of each color, which helps if you play different stakes or switch between cash games and tournaments.

Choosing a case

Match the case to your set size first, then pick the style that suits how you store and carry your chips.

Home game poker chip FAQ

How many poker chips does each player need?

About 50 per player is plenty for a cash game, which is why a 500-chip set covers 8 to 10 players. Tournaments use fewer chips per stack, about 38 in the sample above, but need more total chips for color-ups.

What's a good starting stack for a home tournament?

10,000 points in 38 chips works well for 10 players: 8 × 25, 18 × 100, 8 × 500 and 4 × 1,000.

Are heavier poker chips better?

Not always. 13.5- to 14-gram clay composite chips feel heavy and solid. 10-gram 100% clay chips are lighter but have a soft, textured feel many players prefer.

Should I get clay or clay composite chips?

Clay composite chips are durable and show sharp, detailed designs. 100% clay chips like Milano and Phoenix have a softer, premium feel.

Can I add chips to my set later?

Yes. Every style is sold in rolls of 25, so you can add more of any value or color while that style is available.
